Evelyn Demers is the head nurse and breast cancer nurse at South Shore Surgical Specialists with 50 years of healthcare experience. As a founding member of the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition, she has played a pivotal role in mapping breast cancer in West Islip and continues to serve on the Board of Directors for the past 32 years. 

In addition to her work with WIBCC, Evelyn is also the founder of a monthly breast cancer support group and a certified instructor for self breast examinations. She has been a tireless advocate for breast health and has helped countless women navigate the challenges of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Evelyn's compassion and expertise are rooted in a long and fulfilling career in healthcare. After graduating from high school, she worked at the NYC Foundling Hospital, where she cared for orphaned infants and children. Later, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked in the ICU unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip for 20 years, before transitioning to a part-time position working for Dr. DeAngelis, the Chief of Surgery at Good Samaritan.

Evelyn's exceptional talents did not go unnoticed, and she was invited by Good Samaritan Hospital to provide design ideas for the creation of the Good Samaritan Breast Health Center. Today, after 35 years in healthcare, she continues to work in the same office, currently for Dr. Capizzi at South Shore Surgeons, who specialize in breast surgery.

Evelyn's remarkable dedication to supporting and caring for women with breast cancer has changed the way breast cancer is looked at and treated throughout Long Island. She is known for her exceptional empathy and willingness to go above and beyond for those in need, even giving out her personal cell phone number to women in need of support in the middle of the night.

Evelyn Demers is truly an amazing individual, and her work has touched the lives of countless women and families affected by breast cancer.
